International Commercial Collaborations: Moves for Success

David Shindler
Dr. Shindler has recently been appointed as Executive Director of BioDiscovery Toronto. BioDiscovery Toronto comprises 9 of Toronto's leading research universities and hospital research institutes, and has a mandate to enhance technology transfer and commercialization based on Toronto's world-class biomedical research. BioDiscovery Toronto is developing strategic relationships with local and international industry partners to further its commercial objectives. BioDiscovery's office is located at MaRS, in the core of Toronto's Discovery District.
Dr. Shindler previously served for 6 years as founding President and CEO of Milestone Medica Corporation, a seed venture investment and management company, working with Canada's top biomedical research centres in order to create innovative health products. The fund is fully invested and he is currently a Director of the Corporation.
Between 1990 and 1998, Dr. Shindler served as Senior Executive and Commercial Director of the Canadian Genetic Diseases Network, headquartered at UBC, Vancouver. Before that, with Industry Canada he was responsible for Canada's National Biotechnology Strategy, and also served as Counselor - Science and Technology, at the Canadian High Commission in London, England.
His Ph.D. is from the University of Ottawa with specialization in microbiology and biochemistry
Yu Zhang
Yu brings 10 years extensive experience in the life sciences field, including over 8 years at Novartis Pharma on various management positions, e.g. Business Development & Licensing, Global Project Management for drug development and Global Marketing, in several markets, e.g. China, Switzerland and UK.
Most recently, Yu, based in Vancouver, Canada, was responsible for Business Development at the North American Liaison Office of China Medical Doctor Association.
Yu holds an MBA from China Europe International Business School in China & UK, and a B.Sc. in Virology & Molecular Biology from Wuhan University in China. She speaks fluent English, Mandarin, Cantonese and French.
Adi Treasurywala
After obtaining his PhD in the synthesis of Natural Products at UBC Adi joined Ayerst Laboratories in Montreal and was responsible for starting the first industrial computational chemistry group in Canada. In 1983 he moved with that company to Princeton New Jersey as the head of the computational chemistry group. At Ayerst, Adi became involved with projects in several different therapeutic areas and was responsible for the design of the anti-diabetic drug Tolrestat. Tolrestat is one of the early examples of a commercial substance that has evolved through the participation of computer-assisted molecular design. Dr. Treasurywala has served in various capacities at Ayerst Laboratories, Sterling Winthrop, Allelix Biopharmaceuticals Inc, and Pfizer and recently as the CEO of OncoDynamics Inc., Protagenic Therapeutics Inc., and CELLutions Biosystems Inc. For approximately the last 5 years, Dr. Treasurywala has served as the Chief Operating Officer of the University of Toronto Innovations Foundation (UTIF) and simultaneously as Director of Business Development at the University of Toronto. He is currently the founder and Principal of ArrowCan Partners and a co-founder of PARScor Inc. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Toronto Biotechnology Initiative (TBI). He has over 25 years of experience in the Pharmaceutical Industry with a proven track record in establishing and leading multidisciplinary and multinational teams to success. Throughout his career, Dr. Treasurywala has retained a strong commitment to contributing to the success of the teams with which he has been associated.
Christopher J. Paige
Dr. Paige earned a Ph.D. in Immunology at the Sloan-Kettering Division of Cornell University Graduate School of Medical Sciences in 1979. He became a Member of the Basel Institute for Immunology in Switzerland where he worked from 1980-1987 before joining the Ontario Cancer Institute as a Senior Scientist in 1987. In 1990, Dr. Paige became the founding Director of the Arthritis and Autoimmunity Research Centre as well as Director of Research at The Wellesley Hospital. In 1998, Dr. Paige returned to the Ontario Cancer Institute to assume the role of Vice-President, Research and, subsequently, he assumed his current position of Vice-President, Research at the University Health Network which is comprised of the Toronto General, Toronto Western and Princess Margaret Hospitals. Dr. Paige is a Professor in the Departments of Medical Biophysics and Immunology at the University of Toronto. He is an active educator in the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate programs of the University's School of Medicine and is a sought after speaker at science and medical conferences worldwide. Dr. Paige is an internationally recognized leader in the area of lymphocyte development and antibody formation. He is the Principle Investigator in a Terry Fox Program Project on blood cell development. He also holds grants from the Medical Research Council and the National Cancer Institute. His original research is published in leading scientific journals including Nature, Science, Cell and the Journal of Experimental Medicine. He has served on the Research Advisory Boards of both the National Cancer Institute and the Arthritis Society of Canada. Dr. Paige is the President and founder, along with colleagues from the Wellesley Research Institute, of GEMMA Biotechnology. Its purpose is to discover and commercially develop biological response modifiers which influence the course of human disease.
