TBI October Breakfast: Leveraging Assets to Create a New Biomanufacturing Company

TBI’s October 16th 2008 breakfast meeting was a unique opportunity to discuss the practical applications of protein purification that are successfully being done by Therapure BioPharma Inc.

Therapure Biopharma Inc. is an integrated biopharmaceutical company that develops, manufactures, purifies, and packages therapeutic proteins. They also have developed an extensive pipeline of products based on improving drug transport delivery by developing hemoglobin-conjugated therapeutics to treat infectious disease, cancer and anemia.

Of particular interest to me, was the unique challenge that Therapure BioPharma is facing with their business model. Their customers are provided with expert protein purification services, however, Therapure also conducts its own research and development and are developing therapeutics that could potentially compete with the protein products they are purifying for their customers. This raises the question, if you are a company that was looking for a service provider to purify your proteins, would you be comfortable choosing a company that may potentially compete with you? Therapure does an excellent job of addressing this conflict by saying that they take the time to deal with each conflict on an individual basis. They also raise an important point that most business models run into conflicts of some sort.

All in all, October’s breakfast meeting was a great opportunity for me to learn about Therapure’s unique business model in the rapidly emerging field of therapeutic proteins. It also gave me an excellent opportunity to network with professionals in diverse aspects of biotechnology. The early morning meeting was well worth it!
